Sand Kit
design for Sustainability:
Paper Pulp Egg Tray
Egg trays in grocery stores are made of paper pulp. Paper pulp is made of recycled papers and is a biodegradable material. By studying its life cycle, manufacturing process, and durability, I designed this sand kit for children. It is safe to to compost at sites or degrade by ocean ecosystem.
Paper Pulp manufacture
Although paper pulp can dissolve in water, Hot press paper pulp can last longer than cold press. It is dense, less absorbant, and smooth. Hot press paper pulp from recycled paper could be an ideal material for manufacture.
Concept Sketches
Shapes and forms are from ocean animals including shark, dolphin, starfish, and crab.
Functions are the same as the standard sand play sets: bucket, shovels, rake.
Final Design
PROTOTYPING
Tested grip, size, and general usability.
